Uzbekistan, Kyrgyz
Republic, and Kazakhstan
Uzbekistan -
My time in Uzbekistan was unexpectedly amazing.
We hung out in large groups and were out
almost every night. Kevin was a great host, bringing
to my life adventures like birch wood beatings
at the sauna (he got the brunt of it), getting
to see Shoxrux (Uzbekistan's biggest rapper)
and Sarvar (their version of Lil Bow Wow) live
in concert, making Wynn and I eat dog, teaching
me how to deal with the Militsiya, helping me
count money (you roll with a pretty big stack
there so there's no point in wallets, just the
"brick"), being the first to ask me when I was
sick and dying "Do you think you'll be able to
drink tonight?", introducing me to Big Bon (the
best instant noodles ever), and robbing me every
time we played poker.
Work wise, I
did some design work for PSI (Population Services
International), an NGO based in DC, concentrating
on AIDS/HIV awareness. They have a tough job
in Uzbekistan and they work very hard! I also
ended up doing some cool stuff with UNDP Uzbekistan's
Environmental Unit. Check
it out here.
I also
made it out to Kyrgyz
Republic and Kazakhstan.
More on that in the sites below.
