PROJECTS

KIOKU

Based in New York City, the musical group KIOKU presents traditional Asian folk music within a new context of collaborative experimentation and improvisation. The trio utilizes East and Southeast Asian percussion (Japanese taiko, Korean gongs, and Filipino kulintang), live laptop electronics, and saxophones. While deeply committed to the preservation of musical traditions, KIOKU (Japanese for "memory") acknowledges the plasticity of tradition and freely adopts musical techniques found within improv-based and new music circles.

happyfunsmile

happyfunsmile performs an eclectic mix of okinawan pop, electric folk songs (ultraminyo), supersweet ballads (enka), festival rhythms and obon beats. utilizing the sounds of the taiko drum, chindon, sanshin, accordion, bass, and keys, happyfunsmile extols the virtues of o-pop and chindon to an ever-growing congregation!

fish knuckle

Fish Knuckle is a collaborative exploration of group improvisation, progressive music, and modern composition. From lavish harmonic grooves to pulsating and invigorating improvisations, the group unswervingly offers those with open ears a refreshing experience. Founded as a bicoastal partnership, Fish Knuckle's rich soundscapes are created via the reunion of Heftpistole's former saxophonist Ali Sakkal with current members, drummer Jason Levis and bassist Lisa Mezzacappa. Further rousing of the lush textures is supplied by clarinetist Seth Paris.

Mr. Boyd

They met for 2 days at Eastside Sound Studios NYC to record the live portions of the Godwomanblue album. In between figuring out what Mr. Boyd was thinking when he programmed a 9/4 song in 12/8, the sessions were full of good times. The studio standout jams so far are the tunes: Better luck Lady (Sexy, Sexy), At What Cost (WAKE UP!!!), The Water Below (Is that Dave Matthews on Guitar? No its Mr. Boyd :)))), and the hugely important gospel tinged Spiritual.
